UNTH School of Nursing

The University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH) School of Nursing was established initially as a Specialist Hospital School of Nursing. Still, it was later approved for the training of General Nurse with the University of Nigeria in January 1971.

The school officially became the School of Nursing, University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital under the University of Nigeria Nsukka on April 1st, 1973. 

Approval for training was given after an inspection by a team of nursing professionals from the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) in 1972 led by the then Secretary General/ Registrar.

The school is known for its high standards in both internal and external examinations. Sports events form some of the extra-curricular activities in which the students have been excelling. Students from other schools East of the Niger come to UNTH School of Nursing for orientation and various experiences.

The Pioneer Principal of the school Late Mrs. I. C. Amobi was instrumental in the school being in place. The school has since had 2 other Principals in the persons of Mrs. E. N. Maduka and Dr. C. G. Ugochukwu. The current Principal is Mrs. G. C. Obijiaku who is working with her team of academic staff assisted by the non-academic staff.

Admission Requirements of UNTH School of Nursing

For you to apply for admission into the UNTH School of Nursing, you must meet the following requirements 

  1. Academic Qualification: You must have a minimum of five credits at one or two sittings in your WAEC, NECO, or NABTEB in the following subjects:- Mathematics, English Language, Physics, and Biology 
  2. Meet JAMB Requirement: You must meet the JAMB Admission requirement set by the institution 
  3. Age: You must be 17 years and above before you can be eligible to study at UNTH School of Nursing 
  4. Pass Entrance Exam: You must pass the entrance Exam that will be conducted by the UNTH School of Nursing
  5. Pass oral Interview: After passing the written exam, you are to pass the oral interview before you can be able to gain admission into the school of Nursing

Nursing Programs at UNTH School of Nursing

The following Nursing programs are available at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital School of Nursing.

General Nursing Program

The school runs the General Nursing program which is for three years.

During the period of the General Nursing program, students will be taught the skills and training needed to become certified and professional nurses.

Basic Midwifery 

This program is specifically for nurses who have had their general nursing education.  The training is only for qualified nurses who are duly registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN). The program runs for 18 months.

Post Basic Nursing Anesthetic Nursing program 

The Nurse Anesthetist training program is of 18 months duration. The courses in the program are designed to be 400-level courses, arranged in three semesters and with a prefix of NAP (Nurse Anaesthetist Programme).  Annually, fresh students are admitted in April, to graduate in November the following year.

The School of Nursing, University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital is located in Enugu Metropolis in Enugu North Local Government Area of Enugu State in the South Eastern Zone of Nigeria. 

It is bounded in the north by Iva Valley, South by the Central Police Station (CPS), East by Government Secondary School, and West by Ngwo town.

The aim of the Nursing School is to produce future nursing leaders who will impact local and global health and lead the transformation of healthcare to make lives better through education, research, event-based practice, and community engagement.

The curriculum at UNTH School of Nursing is based on that of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria and recommendations made by the International Council of Nurses (ICN) with modifications made to suit local conditions. Modern methods of teaching are used for the instruction of students.

Application for entry into the school starts in December and ends in January of the next year. The entrance examination into the school takes place around April each year while the interview is in June. About sixty (60) students are admitted yearly and they start training in October.

The examination for the nursing program at the Nursing College consists of a school examination and the Nursing and Midwifery Council Professional Examination for General Nurses.

A student must pass the Hospital Final Examination to qualify for the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria Professional Examination and the Hospital Certificate. The NMCN examination takes place twice yearly. A student is allowed three (3) attempts only at this examination.
