Imo State College of Nursing Sciences Orlu was established in 2013 as a department of General Nursing of the then Imo State College of Nursing and Health Sciences, Amiagbo.

The Imo House of Assembly enacted a law in 2016 that demerged the Department of Nursing and gave it autonomy and full independence to become IMO State College of Nursing Sciences Orlu.

Imo State College of Nursing Sciences Orlu was recognized and granted full accreditation in 2018 by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) for the award of a Registered Nurse (RN) certificate upon graduation.
