CSU Fullerton Nursing Degree Class Requirements 

To become able to study a nursing degree at CSU Fullerton, you must meet the following requirements 

  • You must have obtained an Associate Degree in Nursing ( or equivalent) from an accredited institution 
  • You must have a current California RN license or be eligible for a California RN license, the license must be unencumbered 
  • To be eligible to complete the full-time (2 semesters) study plan, you must obtain a CA RN license within your first semester of the program 
  • Undergraduate transfers (first-time bachelor degree-seeking students) must have a cumulative GPA of 2.75 ( on a 4.0 scale)
  • Post-baccalaureate (second bachelor degree-seeking students ) must have a cumulative GPA of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale or 2.75 within 60 units.
  • You must have completed your college-level courses in the following areas with a minimum of grade C or higher grade:- Oral Communication, Written Communication, Critical Thinking, Anatomy with Lab, Physiology with lab, Microbiology with Lab, Chemistry, Statistics
  • If you are not from an English-speaking country, you will have to submit an English Proficiency test certificate before your application can be considered 
  • You must pass the health clearance criteria such as passing the physical exam, tuberculosis screening, and positive titers for measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis-B, COVID-19, and flu vaccine.
  • You must have a clean criminal record.

NURS 310 Nursing Research (3)

Prerequisite: Statistics

Emphasis is placed on the development of nursing knowledge and the improvement of nursing practice through current relevant evidence. Research methods are examined and current issues are analyzed about the implementation of evidence-based practice in selected settings.

NURS 321 Health Assessment for Professional Practice (3)

Prerequisite: Admission to the Prelicensure pathway; Corequisite: NURS 321L

Health Assessment focuses on health assessment for professional practice. 

Basic knowledge and skills necessary to perform assessments including interviewing, history taking, and foundational physical assessment skills are acquired. 

The course emphasizes developmental and culturally competent assessment skills and the ability to recognize deviations from normal. Concepts learned in the lecture will be practiced in the laboratory. 

Students will practice these techniques on their peers and designated volunteers during supervised campus laboratory sessions. Students will apply lecture concepts to hone their skills and the techniques necessary to intervene and reduce patients’ risks and promote patients’ health.

NURS 321L Health Assessment for Professional Practice Laboratory (1)

Prerequisite: Admission to the Prelicensure pathway; Corequisite: NURS 321

Practice history taking, physical examination techniques, and risk identification on peers during supervised campus laboratory sessions. Application of skills and techniques acquired to intervene and reduce risks and/or promote health with individual clients during the clinical laboratory.

NURS 322 Concepts of Professional Nursing (3)

Prerequisite: Admission to the Prelicensure pathway

Provides an overview of professional nursing roles within the health care environment, including nursing theory and interpersonal communication. Emphasizes theory and evidence-based nursing practice. Highlights the influence of culture and professional values on the role of the professional nurse.

NURS 323 Integrated Pathophysiology and Pharmacology (5)

Prerequisite: Admission to the Prelicensure pathway

Reviews normal anatomy and physiology, altered physiologic states, and nursing management of selected pathophysiologic disorders and diseases. Presents core drug knowledge, pharmacotherapeutics, pharmacodynamics, and pharmacokinetics. 

The course emphasizes drug classifications by categories affecting various body systems and disease states.

NURS 324 Cultural Concepts Across the Lifespan (1)

Prerequisite: Admission to the Prelicensure pathway

Provides a developmental approach to providing culturally appropriate nursing care. Focuses on growth and development and sociocultural factors that influence the health and illness of various cultural groups and explores factors that impact the use of healthcare resources.

NURS 402 Population Health Nursing (3)

Prerequisites: NURS 310, 321, 321L, 322, 323, 324, 403, 403L, 404, 404L, 405, 405L, 406, 406L, 407, 407L; Corequisite: NURS 402L

Content stresses community health nursing roles in prevention and health promotion with culturally diverse families and populations in a variety of community settings. 

Emphasis is given to identifying risk and to using the nursing process with populations at risk.

NURS 402L Population Health Nursing Clinical (2)

Prerequisites: NURS 310, 321, 321L, 322, 323, 324, 403, 403L, 404, 404L, 405, 405L, 406, 406L, 407, 407L; Corequisite: NURS 402

Students will apply community health theory in supervised clinical experience with individuals, families, and communities. 

Clinical experience will be in public health settings, including official agencies and other community agencies. 

Completion of this course satisfies the California Board of Registered Nursing’s requirements for Public Health Nurse Certification (application must be submitted to the BRN upon completion of the nursing program). 

Additional documents and background checks may be required depending on placement.

NURS 403 Foundations of Nursing Practice (3)

Pre or Corequisites: NURS 321, 321L, 322, 323; Corequisite: NURS 403L

Concepts of physiological integrity, psychosocial integrity, safe, effective care environments, and health promotion/maintenance are examined. 

Focuses on beginning competencies required for the care of adult and older adult clients with acute and chronic health problems across a variety of practice settings.

NURS 403L Foundations of Nursing Practice Laboratory (3)

Pre or Corequisites: NURS 321, 321L, 322, 323; Corequisite: NURS 403

Clinical experiences provide opportunities to acquire basic nursing skills in simulated and actual clinical settings. Emphasis is on interpersonal communication, safety, documentation, and selected basic nursing interventions required for clients with acute and chronic health problems.

NURS 404 Mental Health Nursing (3)

Prerequisites: PSYC 101, NURS 321, 321L, 322, 323, 403, 403L; Corequisite: NURS 404L

Integrates theory from nursing, related fields, communication, and critical thinking in providing nursing care for multicultural individuals, families, groups, and specific populations with mental illness, focusing on providing professional nursing care that promotes mental health and adaptation to mental illness.

NURS 404L Mental Health Nursing Laboratory (2)

Prerequisites: PSYC 101, NURS 321, 321L, 322, 323, 403, 403L; Corequisite: NURS 404

Experiences provide opportunities to develop interpersonal communication skills and therapeutic use of self. 

Emphasis on the development of the role of the nurse as provider, designer, and coordinator of care for individuals, families, and community groups with mental health care needs.

NURS 405 Management of Medical Surgical Adult and Older Adult Clients (3)

Prerequisites: PSYC 101, NURS 321, 321L, 322, 323; 403, 403L; Corequisite: NURS 405L

Provides nursing theory for the care of adult and older adult clients with medical-surgical health alterations. 

The course includes diagnostic and therapeutic nursing interventions relevant to medical-surgical health alterations. The course emphasizes the nursing process and critical thinking to manage acute and chronic medical-surgical problems.

NURS 405L Management of Medical-Surgical Adult and Older Adult Clients Laboratory (3)

Prerequisites: PSYC 101, NURS 321, 321L, 322, 323; 403, 403L; Corequisite: NURS 405

Clinical experiences provide opportunities to practice advanced nursing skills in simulated and actual clinical settings. 

This course emphasizes further development of the nursing role in providing and coordinating care for adult and older adult clients with acute and chronic medical-surgical health alterations.

NURS 406 Reproductive Health Nursing (2)

Prerequisites: NURS 321, 321L, 322, 323; 403, 403L, 404, 404L, 405, 405L; Corequisite: NURS 406L

Provides nursing theory for the care of diverse and multicultural women, newborns, and families. 

Emphasis on integration and application of theory from nursing and related fields, standards of clinical practice, evidence-based practice, communication, and critical thinking with the nursing process.

NURS 406L Reproductive Health Nursing Laboratory (2)

NURS 407L Child Health Nursing Laboratory (2)

Prerequisites: NURS 321, 321L, 322, 323; 403, 403L, 404, 404L, 405, 405L; Corequisite: NURS 407

Applies the dimensions of health, health care, and nursing in addressing the health care needs of infants, children, and adolescents with a focus on health promotion, risk reduction, and disease prevention. Clinical experiences occur in pediatric and community health settings.

NURS 410 Leadership/Management in Professional Nursing (3)

Prerequisites: NURS 321, 321L, 322, 323; 403, 403L, 404, 404L, 405, 405L, 406, 406L, 407, 407L; Corequisite: NURS 410L

Focuses on the integration of the leadership role within professional nursing. Analyzes theories of leadership, management, and organizations and their application to health care agencies. Emphasizes the importance of collaboration, accountability, and advocacy in the leadership role.

NURS 410L Leadership/Management in Professional Nursing Laboratory (2)

Prerequisite: NURS 321, 321L, 322, 323; 403, 403L, 404, 404L, 405, 405L, 406, 406L, 407, 407L; Corequisite: NURS 410

Theories and principles of leadership and management are synthesized in a selected clinical area within the health care system. Emphasizes decision-making, critical thinking, client advocacy, collaboration, leadership, and functioning as a team member within the health care setting.

NURS 411 Management of the Adult With Complex Health Alterations (3)

Prerequisites: NURS 321, 321L, 322, 323; 403, 403L, 404, 404L, 405, 405L, 406, 406L, 407, 407L; Corequisite: NURS 411L

Provides nursing theory for the care of adult and older adult clients with complex health alterations; includes diagnostic and therapeutic nursing interventions relevant to advanced medical-surgical health alterations. 

Emphasizes the nursing process and critical thinking to manage and coordinate care.

NURS 411L Management of the Adult with Complex Health Alterations Laboratory (3)

Prerequisites: NURS 321, 321L, 322, 323; 403, 403L, 404, 404L, 405, 405L, 406, 406L, 407, 407L; Corequisite: NURS 411

Experiences provide opportunities to design and coordinate advanced medical-surgical nursing care for adult and older adult clients with complex health alterations; and apply concepts of advanced medical-surgical and critical care nursing. NURS 412 Nursing Capstone (1)

Focus on the application of theory and nursing process for planning, implementing, and evaluating care delivery for patients, both as individuals and cohorts.

NURS 412L Nursing Capstone Laboratory (4)

Prerequisites: NURS 321, 321L, 322, 323; 403, 403L, 404, 404L, 405, 405L, 406, 406L, 407, 407L; Corequisite: NURS 412

Supervised practicum experience with a focus on the application of theory and nursing process for planning, implementing, and evaluating care delivery for patients, both as individuals and cohorts.
